A reflection on the Gospel for the Fourth Sunday of Easter

The center of the message of today’s readings is what John tells us in the second reading about the immense love God has for us. This is a love made concrete in the real relationship between God and us. We are not only called children of God, but we truly are. This is the great change effected in us as a consequence of the revelation of Jesus. We are the children of God, and we cannot even fathom what we are called to become. What is certain is that we can no longer consider God a harsh judge to be feared. Our God is a father, an abba, as Jesus said in his language “daddy.” This is a very close relationship, one of a great trust because from our Dad we can only expect good things. Jesus is our older brother. He has come to gather us together in one family, to make us know this basic fact in our lives: We are children. For us, his brothers and sisters, he surendered everything, even his own life. That is why the image of the Good Shepherd is used. Just as the shepherd gives his life for his sheep, he has given his life for us. The image of the shepherd is referred to Jesus. It speaks of our way of behaving toward us. Just as the shepherd cares with love for each of the sheep in his fold, especially the weaker ones, so Jesus takes care of us.
