Poor Souls in Purgatory

A reflection on the Gospel for the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary time

I always travel with more things I need. I take clothing, personal items, papers, and books that I think I will be able to read, or tasks I believe I will accomplish while I am away. It is hard to travel light because we always think of the many things we might need when we are away from home. When we travel, there is a certain anxiety, a certain fear of the unknown. It is as if we don’t trust our needs will be somewhat covered by the people who will receive and welcome us. In order to have that kind of trust, we might need to have had some experience that those people have not failed us in the past. Then we only have to trust that, once again, they will do the best by us. Jesus sends his friends in twos, because it is always better to work as a team and to lean on one another. But he advises them to travel light. In today’s readings we are encouraged to have that trust that God, who has given us no less than his own son, God who has called us his children, will not abandon us precisely now that we are going to carry out his mission. No matter how weak, like Amos, we might feel, we know that the plan and promise of God will be fufilled, not because we carry so many things and we feel strong and confident, but precisely because we trust God alone. We know God will do the work he has entrusted us with.
