A reflection on the Gospel for the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The world is too large and problems are huge, and we are few and we have few resources and can do very little. Our position in the face of this could be of two different kinds: We could try to join other people in order to pull our few resources together, or we could sit back thinking that our efforts would only be like a drop in the ocean and therefore worth next to nothing. That was the temptation of the friends of Jesus. “Not even with a year’s wages would we have enough.” They think it is so difficult that they didn’t think it worthwhile to even try. Jesus does not argue with them. He does not deny that they are right: Individually, they do not have enough for so many people. But he insists that whoever has something, regardless how little, should bring it forth. The idea is to leave behind a mentality of sacarcity and complainning and to adopt one of thankfulness for whatever we do have. This is a position of generosity to share. Perhaps the talents we have, the gifts we could share with the community do not seem like much . We might even think they are insignificant. What could you do with the ability to sing a few songs, paint a wall, repair a socket, teach something, take care of the children, cook, teach catechesis? Sometimes we might even be surprised that we are asked. But we might be even more surprised to see what happens when each places the little they have at the service of others.

We continue to meet with our fund-raising or Festival Committee to plan our annual Festival here at St. Bruno’s Parish. We hope to continue to work together as a parish community to celebrate our unity and our uniqueness as a multicultural community, to have some clean fun together and at the same time support our parish and raise some funds. Our goal for this year’s Festival is to get funds especially for continuing to work in our Church and build much needed handicap ramps. Our Festival will be held on Saturday, September 23rd and Sunday, September 24th. As usual, we hope to have our grand Raffle of $1,000.00, our Popularity contest, lots of dances, our multicultural food, multicultural talent and entertainment and lots of new games and surprises galore for children and adults. We ask for whatever help you can give us to make this annual Parish fund raiser a success. We need your valued participation and support in whatever, for example in donating your talents, your time and your money for our parish. Thank you very much.

Raffle tickets for our festival are now for sale in the parish office if you would like to buy some. You can get them from the parish office, Gift Shop or you can see Beverly after the Masses.. Each ticket is $1.00 or 12 tickets for $10.00.
