Poor Souls in Purgatory

A reflection on the Gospel for the First Sunday of Advent

There is a Spanish proverb that says that with the new year a new life starts. This is very appropriate for the beginning of the new liturgical year starting today. Advent also invites us to prepare for a new life in Christ. This is a time for renewal, conversion, and expectation. We are expecting that great day when the reign of God will reach its fullness and justice, just as Jeremiah prophesied. Sometimes these ideas of justice and peace might seem quite impossible to realize. The world would have to change radically for this to happen. This radical change announced by Jesus today is not meant to scare or intimidate us, but to help us to realize that we, too, are in charge of radical change in our lives. The constant call to conversion we as Christians are called to becomes more emphasized during Advent. When we have the desire to participate in the building of a better world and the hope we get from our faith, we listen to Christ who calls us to receive and welcome him in our lives. Our lives will then be transformed by conversion and the love of God, who became human and was born in Bethlehem. This is the God we are preparing to receive once again this Christmas.
