A reflection on the Gospel for the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Those of us who are not scientists do not understand exactly the laws or theories of physics or chemistry. And yet we accept what experts tell us and allow ourselves to be led. It is much harder for us, however, to accept what does not have an apparent explanation and goes beyond the laws of nature, what we cannot perceive with our senses. Mary, who is one of the most important symbols of Advent, is a model of faith precisely because she trusted God and his promises. Although she was initially frightened, although what God was saying was far beyond the humanity possible, and although this could bring her problems, she said yes and gave herself to God. The total surrender of Mary to God made it possible for the promises of God to become a reality in Christ. Mary’s faith was a source of joy not only for herself but also for us. This joy that comes from giving oneself to God totally invites us to say, together with Mary: Blessed be God for his love and everything God does for us.

Fr. René Gómez

Christmas is a wonderful time. It’s not true that it’s just about children. It’s about us all. We may consider ourselves very ordinary. But nobody is ordinary any longer, not since Christ came on earth.

Yet he did not come to bring us anything. He came to awaken us to what we already are. We are all children of God.
