A reflection on the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary time

We play the lottery and think of what we would do with the money if we won. Normally, we want it for good things, for our children, to get rid of debt. Secretly, sometimes we also want to have a certain power, a certain power, a certain prestige. That, however, does not come with the lottery. We would have to earn it somehow. Magazines, TV commercials, and fashions, attempt to tell us a great lie: the more we have and the more we can have, the happier we will be. Sometimes since we can only exert control over those who are near us, we attempt to show who is in command and who must obey. Sometimes selfishness leads people to oppress others. We seek happiness and sometimes we do so in all the wrong places. The Constitution of the United States says that all have a right to pursue happiness. Many people interpret it to mean that people have a right to happiness and therefore, someone has to provide that happiness. But, could something outside of us really give us happiness? Happiness is always such an evasive good, it seems we will never reach it through our own efforts. We seek something and almost immediately, we need something else. It is a little like when children are given toys and play obsessively with them for just a short while and then discard the toys. Happiness cannot come from something outside, because it becomes tiresome.

This year ash Wednesday will be on February 21, 2007 in about a weeks time. This is the beginning of Lent. We prepare to celebrate a beautiful and holy Easter that will be on April 8, 2007.

On the weekend of February 10th and 11th when we celebrate Valentine’s Day, all our married couples are specially invited to a Mass this weekend, when we hope to have the renewal of our marriage vows with those married in the church. Also today Saturday, February 10, you are invited to St. Mary’s Cathedral for the annual Anniversary Mass at 12 noon. This Mass is to celebrate the sacrament of Marriage to renew your vows, and to show your support and encouragement for all married couples.

I’m sure we have heard about the appointment of Bishop Wester, our auxiliary Bishop now as Bishop of Salt Lake City, Utah. There will be a special Thanksgiving Mass for him at the Cathedral at 5:30pm Tuesday, February 20, 2007. All our parishioners are invited. We are hoping to get a Bus for our Parish to go to the Cathedral for this occasion. We ask you to please see Francisco Esquivel after the Mass to sign up to go on the Bus. The fee for the bus will be between $7.00 and $10.00 dollars.

On February 15, at 3:30 pm there will be a special “A day with Mother Teresa” at a 1981 Chicago conference on religious life. Another special will be on February 17, at 5 pm and 11 pm on “Sudan: And You Do Not Cry With Us.” tells the story of that troubled nation and the plight of its persecuted Christians. You can see your local listings for the channels or visit www.ewtn.com for more special programs.
