A reflection on the Gospel for the Fifth Sunday of Lent

No matter how harsh or mild the winter has been, each year we look forward to spring. The new season promises us a change in temperatures, new leaves and colorful flowers, more time outdoors, and even people in a better mood. Just the thought of spring brings a smile to our faces. It is with hope that we welcome the new season because it gives us a new perspective on life, it promises us better months ahead. A new perspective and a new future is what Jesus offers us. In a world where we are quick to condemn others, the gospel tells us to forgive, where the marginalized are disregarded, Christ calls us to tell the truth; where hate is acceptable, we are invited to love; where sin is presented as appealing, Jesus offers us grace. A world that reflects Jesus’ vision is the reign of God which is already in our midst. By his life, death, and Resurrection he brought it about. A vision he shared with his followers, whom he invited to help continue to make it a reality.
