A reflection on the Gospel for Fifth Sunday of Easter

Sometimes we know the background of people, or even their family origin because of their way of talking, dressing, voice, or even their way of looking and their expressions. These are identifiable signs that people are not even conscious of. Today Jesus explains how to recognize his friends. He says that they will be recognized by the love they have for one another. “See how they love each other” was sometimes said of the early Christians. This could sound like a romantic and too sugary notion. We speak of love all the time and it sounds really beautiful. Any group asked what is the most important this in life will certainly and quickly answer love. Love, however, is not just a beautiful and pleasant feeling, as some people may think. Sometimes love is difficult, hard, and complicated. I does not consist so much in feeling good of others, to love, does not mean that we will stop disliking some people, or that we will all our personalities and tastes in sync. Sometimes love demands a lot of sacrifice, endurance, and forbearance.
