A reflection on the Gospel for Sixth Sunday of Easter

There are people who give us peace by their sole presence. Others, however, cause great anxiety. We usually don’t know what mood they are in, what would set them off, what will displease them. They are unpredictable, and we approach them with fear. Jesus is not one of those. Today he say: “I give you peace.” Jesus gives us peace because he comes to live in and with us if we follow his commandment to love. God becomes present with his peace. God is present in each person. The dwelling of God is in each person and in the community since the human being is sacred. God, however, is far away when there is lack of love or injustice. It is not that God goes away, but these behaviors reject God, do not allow him, the God of love, to come close. The God of Christians is with us when we love our most vulnerable neighbor and when we gather in Christ’s name.

In the month of May we remember our mother better when we honor the Mother of God. On Mothers’ Day, many children make handmade presents for their moms at school, and husbands give them some small gifts as well. However, on many occasions there are mothers who remain forgotten with the passing time. There are families that consider the elders “a hindrance” and they stop taking care of them, send them to an old folks’ home, or don’t show the respect they deserve when they are at home. This kind of mistreatment and selfishness is reflected in soap operas. Mothers are mothers for a lifetime. When they get older it is the best time to show them our love and give them back the attention we received from childhood. To give a flower as a present is great, but we should do it without forgetting about the rest of the days, or the rest of the years. On this Mothers’ Day we thank all our mothers and congratulate them and pray for all of you that God May have you close to him.
