A reflection on the Gospel for the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary time

When two youngsters fall in love, they will do anything to be together skip school, give up other friendships, and even lie to their parents. All this in the name of love, all this because of the joy it gives them to be with each other. In literature, the famous characters of Romeo and Juliet created by Shakespeare cannot bear to be apart. The obstacles to their love are so overwhelming they feel they can only really be together in death. Tragically they take their own lives. It is amazing what people will do for love. Most famously and most personal to all of us is the figure of Jesus Christ. For love of us and so that we might all be one in Him. He hands over his life freely to the hands of sinners and journey to Calvary. The rest is history. As followers of Christ now, we prize His cross and the sacrifice He made so that we might have life and life to the full. Through His cross the world has been shown true love. And we will tolerate and sacrifice many things so as to conserve that love. As Catholics we refer to our belief in Christ’s sacrificial love as faith. Faith we believe, can move mountains. Faith can overcome the most difficult of circumstances of life; from dealing with terminal illness to a recovering from broken relationship.
