A reflection on the Gospel for the Fifth Sunday of Lent

Nothing is as sure as death. It means we are no longer able to see the person we love and it fills us with sadness and pain. However, there is something in us that resists believing in the finality of death. Recently, one of my good friends passed away. When I promised her husband to pray for her, he said: “Don’t pray for her, we know where she is, and she is well. Pray for those of us who stay behind.” Another friend of the deceased said to me in tears that she knew she was being selfish., but she missed her a lot. Was she being selfish? The friend believed she should have been happy for her loved one who was happy and at peace. What this reveals is that despite the pain we realize there is a full life afterwards. Jesus understood pain. He understood that Martha would cry for her brother. He was also moved and cried over the death of his friend Lazarus. It is normal to become sad and it is logical to miss the people that have brought moments of joy. But Jesus also forces us to look beyond those moments of pain: “I am the resurrection and life.” And he gives a new life to Lazarus.
